Morro de São Paulo is located in Tinharé island the largest of 4 islands situated in the bay of Valença, south and very close to Salvador de Bahia.
Tourism in Morro de São Paulo is busy during brazilian holidays and more calm the rest of the time. During low season you can enjoy relaxing walks along the beaches.
The more convenient way to go to the island is by boat or by flights using small taxi planes making direct connections with Salvador.
Cars are forbidden in the island which has pushed local people to adapt in different ways. The most convenient motorized transportation is by tractor and if you have luggages to transport from the pier then you will be helped by locals using wheelbarrows to carry them. All this makes it a surprizing scene.
Morro de São Paulo, because of its geographic position, a bit away but still facing Salvador and the bay entrance became an important location, attacked by pirats and native indians from the inland. The location was strategic enought to explain the development of the village and the presence of historical monuments, today protected by the governement.
